Aiming to achieve peak performance, five Cuban boxers qualified for Paris 2024 have traveled to France to set up a training base less than 40 days before the Olympic Games kick off. Led by the reigning double Olympic champions Julio César la Cruz (92 kilograms) and Arlen López (80 kilograms), the group is rounded out by world medalists Saidel Horta (57 kilograms), Erislandy Álvarez (63.5 kilograms), and Alejandro Claro (51 kilograms).

According to JIT's digital platform, the boxers are currently training in the commune Tremblay-en-France, but starting July 5, they will join an international camp in Nancy. Alberto Puig de la Barca, president of the Cuban Boxing Federation, announced that they will spar with athletes from Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan, India, Germany, England, Ireland, and Puerto Rico.

Boxing is undoubtedly one of the most significant sports for the island as they look ahead to the Olympic competition, which will take place from August 26 to July 11. In Tokyo 2020, Cuba celebrated four gold medals: those of La Cruz and López, and the victories of Roniel Iglesias and Andy Cruz, who did not participate in the qualifying process. Andy Cruz is currently competing in professional boxing.

Historically, Cuba has won 41 gold medals, 19 silver, and 18 bronze in Olympic boxing, making it a flagship sport for the country's athletic movement. With the multi-decorated wrestler Mijaín López carrying the national flag, Cuba aims to secure five gold medals in Paris 2024 and finish among the top 25 nations in the final medal standings. Three years ago in Tokyo, the island ranked 14th with seven gold medals, three silver, and five bronze.
