A new partnership between a Russian company and a Cuban enterprise was established during the IV Cubaindustria 2024 Convention and International Exhibition. The goal is to produce scales and weighing machines, a sector significantly underdeveloped in the context of the Island.

The Empresa de Fabricación y Servicios de Instrumentos de Pesar (Pexac), the only company of its kind in the country, and a Russian entity signed this international economic association named CubaRus, which is expected to enhance these devices in the nation.

Pexac, a Cuban company belonging to the Electronics Group, has been at a production standstill for two years due to a lack of spare parts needed for its operations. Laura Hernández Baquero, the general director of the entity, expressed confidence that this alliance would revitalize the manufacture of various weighing instruments, such as commercial scales and industrial weighing machines, as reported by the official newspaper Granma.

In this initial phase, she assured that the focus is on industrial and commercial catalogues. However, they do not rule out expanding production to all economic sectors that require these instruments, including domestic trade, agriculture, healthcare, ports, and airports.

She also stated that they are interested in exporting these products to Central American and Caribbean countries, while confirming that domestic sales will be conducted in foreign currency. The executive mentioned that the profits generated from these sales would be allocated to social programs, including some in Public Health, such as the manufacturing of neonatal scales.

This new alliance is part of the strategic ties the Cuban government is establishing with Russia, creating an economic dependency on the Eurasian nation, projected by leaders as a potential solution to the severe economic crisis facing the Island.

Meanwhile, complaints from the population are frequent regarding the poor calibration and maintenance of the scales used to sell the limited food products they can access, whether from the state sector in grocery stores and agromarkets, or the private sector.
