Renowned Cuban volleyball player Robertlandy Simón has announced his departure from the national team following their defeat against Poland in the last match of the Volleyball Nations League. This loss marks the end of their journey towards the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Simón, the team leader, shared a heartfelt message on his Instagram account on Sunday, addressing all his teammates. "Thank you for everything, guys. I love you and keep fighting," he wrote.

This marks the farewell of the middle blocker who scored 92 points (58 in attacks, 22 in blocks, and 12 in serves) throughout the tournament. The 37-year-old from Guantánamo, once considered the best middle blocker in the world, returned to the Cuban team after several years with the goal of securing a spot in the Olympics, which would have been his only chance to participate in such an event.

His post has garnered thousands of likes from fans, friends, and colleagues. "What a great experience to share the court with you. Thank you for your teachings and advice," emphasized fellow middle blocker Javier Concepción.

"Thank you, thank you so much for everything Simón. You are great. It was a pleasure playing alongside you, brother," said libero Yonder García.

"Thank you for everything, brother, for the help and the teachings. I wish you the best," commented Marlon Yant.

"My brother, you deserved an Olympic Games appearance, but unfortunately, it didn't happen. Nevertheless, you are a legend in the world of volleyball. We love you," remarked Osmany Juantorena, another Cuban athlete now nationalized Italian.

Simón was part of the Cuban team from 2005 to 2010, the year he legally emigrated from Cuba to play professionally in Europe. He rejoined the Cuban team in 2019.
