A baker in the province of Camagüey has decided to donate a cake to a quinceañera from a low-income family, a gesture that stands out amidst one of the worst economic crises in Cuba's history.
Guelmi Abdul shared on Facebook that Sweet Yeyeo, considered one of the best bakers in the province, will donate the cake, bringing immense joy to a young girl on her 15th birthday this coming July. Abdul posted screenshots of a conversation where the baker explained that a customer had overpaid for a cake, and the excess money would be used to gift a cake to a quinceañera.
"My eternal gratitude and admiration. You could have increased your profits, but you chose to perform an act of kindness and love," Abdul expressed.
Among the screenshots, there was also a chat with a nurse who works in a nursing home. The nurse requested to be considered so that her daughter, who also turns 15 in July, could receive the donated cake. "I am one of those many needy mothers in Cuba who wants to give a small gift to my girl; her quinceañera is in July," the nurse explained, mentioning that she is a single mother with another 10-year-old child. "We are all living below the poverty line, and the salary barely covers food," the grateful mother pointed out.
The economic crisis in Cuba reveals scenes of solidarity that go beyond donating clothes, food, or money. Gestures like gifting a cake or mobilizing resources for affected families also emerge.
