Lester Domínguez, the young Cuban who has been unable to walk for over a year after being attacked with a machete in a violent assault in Holguín, continues his rehabilitation in Havana.
According to his father’s Facebook post, Lester will arrive at the Julio Díaz Hospital this Wednesday to further his recovery. "He has been unable to take a step for a year and three months. His arms and legs are stronger, and he has sensitivity throughout his body. We are hoping for new progress," his father commented.
In late May, Dennis explained that he was trying to get his son admitted to Julio Díaz to start a therapy that could help him walk again. At that time, Lester asked his father to take him out of the country after realizing that the conditions in Cuba were not conducive to his recovery.
"The boy sees that everything is complicated with the power outages in Cuba, and he lacks the necessary conditions for his progress. He tells me that the best way I can help him is by leaving the country," he said. "We have many relatives abroad, and we always end up empty-handed. To avoid begging for his recovery, he suggests trying through Nicaragua. Let’s see if I can fulfill his wish, even if it’s the last thing I do," he emphasized.
The trial against Lester’s attacker was held on May 15. The accused, identified as Adrián Grass Bermúdez, is facing a 20-year prison sentence for attacking Lester with a machete and an additional four years for stealing two phones from other victims, which were recovered along with Lester’s phone, found buried in the attacker’s backyard.
