The National Hurricane Center (NHC) issued a warning this Thursday about the formation of a system in the eastern Atlantic (AL95) that could develop into a tropical depression or storm by this weekend. The system is currently several hundred miles east of the Windward Islands, but weather conditions are favorable for its strengthening within a few hours. It is moving westward at speeds between 15 and 20 mph.

The probability of formation within the next 48 hours stands at 40%, but this likelihood increases over time, reaching a 70% chance of becoming a tropical storm within seven days.

Potential Additional Systems

Additionally, there is a possibility of another system (AL94) forming over the southwestern Gulf of Mexico by the end of this week. This tropical wave over the western Caribbean Sea is currently producing disorganized showers and thunderstorms as it moves westward at approximately 20 mph. It is also likely to become a tropical storm within seven days.

These systems could potentially impact Cuba, especially the one currently farther from the island based on forecasted trajectories.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) of the United States has predicted a more active than usual hurricane season in the Atlantic this year. Up to 13 hurricanes are expected to form in the Caribbean region, with seven of them potentially being of great intensity. From June 1 to November 30, between 17 and 25 storms with winds exceeding 62 kilometers per hour are anticipated to develop.
