The inaction of the Cuban regime has driven activists to seek assistance on social media for an elderly woman and her nephew with Down syndrome in Camagüey, who are suffering from severe food shortages.
Activist Guelmi Abdul shared their plight on Facebook, explaining that Iris, a 72-year-old woman, has taken on the care of her 24-year-old nephew Yosvany. However, their situation is dire due to their limited financial means.
According to the post, Yosvany lived with two brothers who pawned the social welfare check he had been receiving, which is now in the process of being canceled. They also sold the ration book: “They left him alone at home, so his aunt took him with her.”
However, Iris, being an elderly woman, is struggling to provide for her nephew, Abdul noted in her post.
Currently, some neighbors, the Medicamento Ayuda Camagüey group on WhatsApp, and the Aleluya Temple in Plaza de La Habana, led by Dr. Oscar Rivero, are supporting the family with clothes, a mattress, hygiene supplies, and shoes.
“We need to come together and add more people to the cause because they are in desperate need of food,” the post stated, emphasizing that this is just one of many families in Cuba suffering under the regime's indifferent gaze.
Iris and Yosvany reside in Building 11, Apartment 9, Sánchez Soto neighborhood, across from the computer club in Sánchez Soto, Camagüey. The home's landline number is 32201496.
Recently, the same activist highlighted a very similar situation in Camagüey, reporting on the dire circumstances of an elderly woman and her son with Down syndrome, who are in such a severe crisis that the woman has had to resort to begging on the streets.
Abdul, who runs a support group for those in need, shared on her Facebook the story of Roger, a young man with Down syndrome, and his mother Gilda, who is over 70 years old.
