The Cuban pitcher Reykelly Rubi has achieved a significant milestone in his athletic career by signing a contract with the Baltimore Orioles, officially joining the Major League Baseball (MLB) system. According to sports journalist Francys Romero, Rubi, who is just 18 years old, becomes the 22nd Cuban-born player to reach this goal during the current international signing period.

On Facebook, Romero described Rubi as a left-handed pitcher with a fastball ranging between 88 and 90 miles per hour (mph) and an above-average curveball. Additionally, Rubi has the invaluable asset of youth on his side. Romero also noted that Rubi, who belongs to the Yuan Pino Academy in the Dominican Republic, left Cuba four years ago with the dream of joining an MLB team.

In another update, Romero revealed on Wednesday that another Cuban pitcher, Alexander Valiente (21), has an agreement with the Toronto Blue Jays for an estimated $75,000. "He is expected to sign when a new international period opens on January 15, 2025," Romero added, noting that Valiente, a native of Guantánamo, can throw a fastball between 93-96 mph and was part of the national under-23 team in 2022.

Just a few days ago, after overcoming numerous challenges, Yosver Zulueta from Villa Clara achieved his dream of debuting in the MLB by pitching three innings for the Cincinnati Reds. At 26 years old, Zulueta appeared in the "big leagues" after undergoing knee surgery that sidelined him for a year and working his way through all levels of the minor leagues.

While the Cuban government continues to deflect blame for the exodus of athletes, the reality is that these young talents are merely seeking a better future, hoping to escape the dire conditions faced by athletes in Cuba, where nothing seems to be improving.
