Cubans and Hurricanes in Miami: George Harris Says "They Have a Magic"

Saturday, June 29, 2024 by Isabella Sanchez

After years of dealing with hurricanes on the island, Cubans in the United States are not intimidated by these natural phenomena. Instead, they calmly await the impact and ensure they are well-prepared for those days. Venezuelan comedian George Harris hilariously imitated the reaction of Cubans in Miami when a cyclone approaches during one of his shows.

"The United States and Canada could face the worst hurricane season in history. Well folks, if you have a Cuban friend, go to their house because that's the only place where the hurricane won't hit. Cubans have a magic that avoids all hurricanes," joked the comedian, drawing laughter from the audience.

"I have Cuban friends, and when Irma came, none of them left Miami," Harris said, mimicking the Cuban accent. He recounted how he told them he was heading to Orlando for evacuation, and they responded, "They always say the same crap, forget about it. Buy Chinese rice, Chinese food, buy pizza, get a beer, and play at home. If the internet goes out, who cares, do something else. Why would you leave, you're just wasting gas."

George Harris topped it off by adding, in his Cuban character's voice, "Imagine if we had to leave Cuba because a hurricane was coming, no one would return."

The comedian's reference to hurricanes comes just as the hurricane season begins, with the first tropical storm, Beryl, posing a potential threat to Cuba.
