A Cuban activist distributed ham and cheese sandwiches to low-income seniors in Havana on Saturday night, aiming to improve the nutrition of this vulnerable group. Yankiel Fernández, coordinator of the Humanitarian Project Aliento de Vida, explained on Facebook this Saturday that he decided to distribute ham and cheese sandwiches to the elderly because he considers it insufficient to provide them with lunch only twice a week and to reinforce their nutrition on Fridays. "We always have much more to do," he stated.
The activist emphasized that he couldn't "sit idly by" because he believes there is a "need" and too many vulnerable and needy people, as a result of the Cuban regime's inaction. "Thanks to those who help us continue helping, thanks to God for touching hearts and sending us angels," he noted in his post.
In the photo gallery shared, at least a dozen seniors were seen benefiting from the initiative. It is evident that these individuals are of low economic resources.
Recently, the same activist launched a call for help for children living in extreme poverty in villages in the Sierra Maestra and other remote areas of the Santiago de Cuba province. Fernández made an appeal on social media to anyone who could contribute donations for the children and other residents in these communities who lack basic necessities such as food, clothing, and medicines.
Amid the economic crisis and extreme scarcity, combined with the inaction of the Cuban regime, many people are left vulnerable and destitute. This situation has sparked the solidarity of several activists.
In January, young Cuban Massiel Carrasquero Ramos distributed caldosa with friends to vulnerable people in Havana. From her Facebook profile, where she identifies as Massy Carram, the young woman announced her intention to make caldosa to distribute. "People don't just eat on 12/31," she said.
