Barcelona's Pickpocket Problem Sparks Debate on TikTok, Says Cuban Influencer

Monday, July 1, 2024 by Elizabeth Alvarado

Lianet Brito, known as @iam_lianet on TikTok, has ignited a heated discussion online after posting a video questioning the safety of Barcelona. In her video, Brito described a troubling situation in the Catalan city, noting a high presence of pickpockets and various safety warnings on public transport and in the streets.

“How unsafe is Barcelona? Well, in these central areas, you'll notice everyone holding their phone with a cord or using anti-theft bags, just like me. The city is riddled with pickpockets. If you're not careful, they'll steal your soul to sell it to the devil,” she began.

Brito also mentioned the warnings heard in the metro and signs in multiple languages that alert tourists to be mindful of their belongings. She further advised caution around costumed individuals who supposedly offer to take photos with tourists but use the distraction to steal.

“When you enter the metro, you'll constantly hear an audio warning you to watch your belongings. They warn you, and there are several signs on the streets that tell you in various languages. Lastly, be cautious of people in costumes who seem to be there to take photos with people, but some use the distraction to pick your pockets,” she added.

Reactions were swift, with divided opinions on the accuracy and generalization of the young Cuban's statements. “I’m from Barcelona, and unfortunately, it's getting worse every day. Like everywhere, but that doesn’t console me. There’s more violence than ever”; “Line 1 and line 3 of the metro are the worst, I’ve seen them in action for those who say it’s fake,” some commented.

Others countered, “I’ve never been robbed in Barcelona and I walk around even in El Raval.” “I live in Barcelona, work in Barcelona, and in 65 years, I’ve never been robbed... and I work in El Raval and the old town”; “Like in all cities. You just need to travel a bit to know”; “And in Paris, and in London, and in Rome, and in Madrid and in Berlin, big news”; “The cord for the phone... People usually wear a lanyard around their neck, they sell them in stores”; “Anti-theft bags, really?”; “I’ve never been robbed in Barcelona,” others refuted and added.

What do you think? Is the young woman's perception biased, exaggerated, or a reflection of reality?
