Cuban Farmer Exposes Government Lies Through Poetry

Monday, July 1, 2024 by Bella Nunez

A Cuban farmer is gaining viral attention with verses that expose the lies of the regime, recounting what happened during a visit by Díaz-Canel to his province. The elderly man, a native of Pinar del Río, offers a unique take on what occurs when high-ranking officials visit towns and municipalities in the interior, where authorities go to great lengths to fabricate the truth.

In a video shared on TikTok by the user Ariel Fuentes, the man details that when Díaz-Canel visited Viñales, the local government did everything possible to hide the crisis, from painting royal palms to bringing in cows from another territory to showcase "their livestock."

After the government visit ends, the hardship and scarcity return to the lives of the people without any embellishments. "The store in Guajaní was fully stocked, they even brought in sorbet and sesame bars. The people shopping there were overjoyed, and I believe a storm brewed the next day when they saw the truck taking the goods away," the farmer recited.

Many internet users praised him for his poetic talent and pointed out that, although his message is humorous, it also serves as a denunciation of what has always happened in the country. "Funny but true, anywhere else in the world this is humor, but in Cuba, it’s a sad reality," said one user.

"But Canel knows everything. He is oblivious to nothing," assured another. "That's very real; they are used to it," wrote one woman. "That's exactly how it is, everything is a circus," affirmed another.
