New exotic species have arrived at the mini-zoo in Watkin Park in the city of Matanzas, following an exchange with the National Zoo of Cuba. The newly received animals include one puma, one jaguar, one leopard, two Egyptian geese, one ankole, and two ferrets, all considered exotic specimens, according to a report by the official newspaper Girón.

As part of the exchange, five lions from the Matanzas park were sent to the capital's zoo, leaving only one pair of lions in the so-called Athens of Cuba. "The exchange aimed to diversify the fauna at the park and to reduce the feeding burden posed by these large felines," stated the aforementioned media outlet in a photo report published this Monday.

Currently, Watkin Park is under quarantine to allow the newly arrived animals to adapt. Additionally, the park expects to introduce more animals for the summer season, which is considered vacation time for children and young people, although leisure options are scarce.

"The mentioned species are a unique novelty since the province has never before hosted these specimens," the report concluded.

In 2018, the birth of two lion cubs at this mini-zoo brought joy to the city's residents. However, for several years, neighbors have been reporting the malnutrition state of the animals. "Our visits, far from being enjoyable, bring us sadness and sorrow," stated a resident who sent a letter to CiberCuba in 2018 to denounce the situation.

This mini-zoo was reopened in April 2017. According to TV Yumurí, the renovation works were aimed at making it enjoyable for families after it had been left in disrepair due to a lack of maintenance.
