Animal Rights Activist Rescues Puppy Abandoned in Tied Plastic Bag in Mayabeque

Tuesday, July 2, 2024 by Oscar Guevara

A animal rights activist in Mayabeque rescued a puppy this Monday that had been abandoned inside a tied plastic bag. Visibly emotional, she stated, "If he hadn't moved, he would have suffocated without being able to breathe."

Yenney Caballero reported the incident on Facebook, declaring that unlike the person who committed the animal cruelty, she will fight for the dog's life: "If he doesn't survive, he will have a dignified end as a living being."

The activist reported that the puppy seems to be suffering from a disease known as distemper and, although he is already receiving treatment with an IV, she requested help: "If anyone can provide me with some phenobarbital tablets, I would be very grateful."

"They could have left him at the veterinary clinic's door or at my home’s porch. I would never leave a baby like that," Caballero emphasized, demonstrating her strong commitment to animal welfare.

"Human misery is immense, and that's why they don't prosper. I'm tired of humans," she expressed, wishing she could take animals far from a planet she sees as full of people without values.

Hours after reporting the animal cruelty, Caballero informed that the puppy's health condition was not good. "Distemper is a very terrible disease. Now we are at the vet administering his medications, because I won’t give up," said the animal protector while sharing a photo gallery showing their efforts to save the puppy's life.

"I pray to God that he makes it, but if not, he is receiving a lot of love and all the necessary care," she expressed in her post.

Animal Abandonment in Cuba: A Growing Concern

Cases of animal abandonment are not isolated incidents. The inaction of the Cuban regime regarding animal protection and rights often leaves many dogs, cats, and horses vulnerable to abuse from their owners.

Recently, the abandonment of five newborn puppies in the rain sparked significant outrage among animal rights activists in Sancti Spíritus, who mobilized through social media to save the puppies' lives. The ARCA Foundation described the incident on Facebook as "a tragedy" while informing that the puppies had been rescued: "They have been picked up, but an urgent foster mother is needed."

Additionally, a user reported this Monday that a dog was abandoned at a bus stop in Havana, left tied to a fence with a collar and its name written on a piece of cardboard. The animal was rescued, and now they are looking for someone to adopt it.

"This puppy was abandoned early Saturday morning with his collar, his name, and everything. They tied him at the bus stop we marked in green," explained Raisa Pérez Villaverde in the Facebook group "SOS Callejeros Cuba."
