Despite meteorological models indicating that the powerful Hurricane Beryl will steer clear of Cuba, the country's leader, Miguel Díaz-Canel, has urged Cubans to remain vigilant as the storm passes near Caribbean waters. “Cuba will not be directly impacted by the strong Hurricane Beryl, but as it moves through the southern seas of the Island, we may feel some of its effects. I ask our people to stay informed and follow the instructions issued by the Civil Defense. Stay alert and prepared,” the president wrote on his social media account X.

The eye of Hurricane Beryl will pass far from Cuba; however, the so-called "dirty side" of the powerful meteorological phenomenon, which is the strongest in terms of winds and rains, will indeed affect the country. According to the forecast from the National Hurricane Center (NHC), from Wednesday morning until Thursday, some areas of the country may experience winds of up to 63 km/h in gusts.

This Tuesday, Beryl reached Category 5—the highest on the Saffir-Simpson scale, with winds exceeding 250 km/h—and it continues to advance towards the Gulf of Mexico at a speed of 35 km/h. The NHC predicted that Beryl will continue to move quickly toward the west-northwest over the next two days and will turn west on Thursday. Jamaica and the Cayman Islands are on alert, and could be affected by the powerful hurricane on Thursday.

Indirect Impact on Cuba

Although Beryl’s indirect impact on Cuba is somewhat of a relief given the current economic conditions the country is facing, vigilance remains crucial due to the winds and rains the storm will bring. Less than two weeks ago, a series of building collapses were reported in Cuba following intense rains that hit the capital, resulting in tragic casualties, injuries, and growing concerns about the precarious state of housing on the island. These incidents highlight not only the vulnerability of residential structures but also the inefficiency of the authorities in ensuring citizens' safety.
