Tuesday, July 2, 2024 by Olivia Torres

A 42-year-old Cuban woman was fatally stabbed early Monday morning by her ex-partner in Irving, Dallas County, Texas, according to the local police department.

The victim has been identified as Sucel Cuba Gómez. Her assailant, 44-year-old Yunier Aldazábal, has already been apprehended by the police.

The press release revealed that around 6:15 a.m. on July 1, police received a call about an incident in a parking lot on Walnut Hill Lane. Upon arrival, they found the victim lying on the ground with multiple stab wounds.

Although the attacker fled the scene after committing the femicide, he was located by the police inside his vehicle around 9 a.m. (local time) in another parking lot. The man was detained without incident and is currently in police custody.

Crime reporter Niover Licea noted that Sucel had recently ended her romantic relationship with Aldazábal, who allegedly traveled specifically from North Dakota to murder her.

The woman, who had reportedly arrived in the United States recently, was the mother of two children aged 12 and 15. It has not been disclosed whether the minors lived with her in the U.S. or are still in Cuba.

Both the victim and her assailant are natives of the Cueto municipality in Holguín province, where the crime has shocked the community.

Community Reactions

Sucel Gómez worked as a teacher on the island, and several of her former students have expressed their grief over the tragedy. "My teacher, in these cases, I am left speechless. I will always remember you as one of the best teachers I have ever had. You filled us with your love and helped us grow every day. For each class, you brought motivation with the plan that we would feel comfortable," wrote a young woman on Facebook in a heartfelt post.

"You were a teacher, guide, friend. Your departure leaves me with great pain. I don't understand why such things happen to good people. May God take care of you, my dear, wherever you are. Rest in peace," added the former student.

"My dear friend, I still can't believe you're gone. A great woman, warrior, full of many goals and dreams. May God have you in His Holy Glory. My deepest condolences to her family," wrote another person close to the deceased Cuban woman.

As of the close of this report, no additional details about the unfortunate incident have been released.
