José Rubiera Warns of Rain in Eastern Cuba Due to Hurricane Beryl

Wednesday, July 3, 2024 by Joseph Morales

The popular Cuban meteorologist José Rubiera has issued a warning that Hurricane Beryl will bring rain primarily to the eastern regions of Cuba in the coming hours, urging residents to stay alert.

Late Tuesday, Rubiera demonstrated through satellite simulations that on Wednesday, the eastern provinces will be affected by rain. He illustrated how these provinces fall within a yellow-shaded area on the displayed map. The meteorologist described the precipitation as "moderate, but not light," clarifying that light rains would correspond to the light green area, which covers the rest of the country.

Rubiera stressed that although Beryl is not heading directly towards Cuba and is weakening, the hurricane should still be considered a "threat," listing several "surprises" the meteorological phenomenon has presented since it began as a tropical depression on June 28. As Beryl approaches Jamaica, Rubiera noted signs of increasing weakness and some loss of structure, attributing these changes to strong atmospheric winds and the intake of dry air.

He urged continued vigilance regarding Beryl’s trajectory, noting that fortunately, Cuba is not expected to experience the worst of the hurricane. The Institute of Meteorology (INSMET) of Cuba forecasts that Beryl's passage through the Caribbean Sea will result in significant effects over the next few days, such as heavy rains, strong surf, and coastal flooding from east to west across the island.

INSMET has warned that starting Wednesday, sustained winds in the eastern region could reach speeds of 40 to 55 km/h, with higher gusts. Miguel Díaz-Canel called on citizens this Tuesday to stay "alert and prepared," emphasizing that while Cuba will not be directly hit by the powerful Hurricane Beryl, its passage through southern waters may bring some of its effects to the island.

"I urge our people to stay informed and follow the instructions issued by the Civil Defense," the leader reiterated on the social media platform X.
