A young woman from Santiago de Cuba who was stabbed by her partner last Saturday had to undergo emergency surgery for the second time on Wednesday. The victim, named Ana Keilan Portillo, was operated on at the Provincial Hospital Saturnino Lora, where she is currently admitted.
According to independent journalist Yosmany Mayeta Portillo, the woman's wound became infected, and she even vomited "fecal matter." "Ana Keilan is reported to be in serious condition but is evolving satisfactorily following this new surgical intervention," he detailed on Facebook.
The reporter also noted that rumors had spread this morning that the young woman had passed away. Meanwhile, her attacker was initially released after paying a bail of 5,000 pesos but was re-arrested on Tuesday. "It's inhumane that a woman's life and safety can be valued at 5,000 pesos in national currency. A regime or government has no authority to put a price on the tranquility, well-being, and protection of a human being," Mayeta emphasized.
Ana was attacked on Saturday with a knife, suffering injuries to her kidney and colon that required surgery. On Wednesday, close associates reported that her physical condition had deteriorated and that the hospital lacked the necessary resources to treat her. "Her wound is infected, and she has been struggling to breathe since last night. There is no oxygen tank available, and if one appears, there is no pressure gauge. The family is desperate. The young woman feels so bad that she is saying her goodbyes, thinking she is going to die," a witness recounted.
The source further explained that the nurses have said, "there are no resources." "They provided her with a portable oxygen device that doesn't even work. This is a disgrace," the witness lamented.
