Thursday, July 4, 2024 by Daniel Vasquez

A severe local storm caused significant damage in Manzanillo as a result of the feeder bands from Hurricane Beryl. In the southern territories of Granma, moderate rains and strong surf were recorded, with no reports of casualties or injuries.

Recovery efforts are now focused on repairing the damages to electric and telephone services, which were affected by strong winds and falling trees. In the municipalities of Niquero, Pilón, Media Luna, Campechuela, and Bartolomé Masó, residents from low-lying areas were evacuated.

The first electrical service disruptions in the eastern province were reported on Wednesday due to the hurricane's proximity. Photos shared by CMKX Radio Bayamo showed a fallen pole in front of houses, several downed power lines, and numerous branches on the ground.

"During natural phenomena like Hurricane Beryl, parts of the electrical grid are always affected because most of our lines are aerial and suffer damage from winds and intense rains," the electric company noted.

In Cabo Cruz, within the municipality of Niquero, waves reached heights of 1.5 to 2 meters, and sustained winds were clocked at 40 km per hour with gusts up to 80 km per hour.

Hurricane Beryl left at least 10 dead in the Caribbean region after passing through Jamaica on Wednesday, where more than 400,000 residents are without electricity, and millions of euros in infrastructure damage have been reported. The fatalities were reported in Jamaica (1), Grenada (3), Saint Vincent and the Grenadines (3), and Venezuela (3), where five additional people are missing.

The phenomenon is expected to enter the Yucatan Peninsula, a highly touristic area, on Thursday night or early Friday morning.
