The Cuban TikTok influencer Roger Roger (known as Rogerito81), who dedicates his efforts to helping fellow Cubans in Tampa who are homeless, recently shared the story of an elderly Cuban-American man struggling to survive. The man, named Daniel Díaz, left Cuba in 1968 and hails from Marianao, Havana. His retirement income is insufficient to cover rent, forcing him to sleep at a gas station.
A Cuban father and his daughter, upon seeing Daniel's plight, brought him food for several days. They also informed Roger Roger, who subsequently took Daniel to the The Salvation Army Red Shield center, which provides temporary housing for the homeless. Fortunately, a spot was available.
"Thank God, I can leave him here temporarily," said Roger Roger. He also appealed to the public for help, requesting anyone with a spare room for the elderly man to contact him at 727-564-0354.
In another video, Daniel shared that he has been homeless for two months. He previously rented an apartment with a friend, splitting the rent. However, after his friend passed away, Daniel could not afford the full rent alone and was evicted. He also asked for help to locate his brother, Juan Díaz, and Juan's wife, Caridad Díaz (Cari), with whom he lost contact.
The Cuban father and his daughter who initially helped Daniel left their phone numbers and promised not to abandon him.
Another Heartbreaking Case
This week, Rogerito81 sought assistance for another elderly Cuban man found begging on the streets of Tampa. The man, named Cándido, is from Trinidad, Sancti Spíritus. Although he receives Food Stamps benefits, they are not enough to cover his rent. Cándido mentioned that he applied for Section 8, the federal rental subsidy for low-income individuals, a year ago but has not yet been approved.
Roger noted that Cándido is often seen around Hillsborough and Havana in Tampa and urged people to offer help rather than simply rolling up their car windows.
Previous Humanitarian Efforts
In August, the TikToker organized a support group through his profile for a man from Guantánamo living on the streets of Florida. The man, identified as Melquiades Limonta, arrived in the United States in 1961 and has not been able to return to Cuba, where he has three children and a sister he wishes to see.
Roger Roger contacted Limonta's family, who live in the Abel Santamaría neighborhood of Guantánamo, and committed to covering the costs of his passport and travel expenses. He also showcased how a group of Cubans provided humanitarian aid, including clothes, shoes, and fresh food, to Limonta.
In an emotional video, Limonta broke down in tears upon hearing his sister's voice during a video call, where she expressed her desire to welcome him into her home.
