On the eve of the third anniversary of the popular uprising on July 11, 2021, Cuban activists have unveiled the independent organization Citizenship and Freedom. Established in 2023, this group aims to defend the rights of association, assembly, and political participation in Cuba while promoting active citizen engagement to transform their reality.
Official Statement from Citizenship and Freedom
Below, we reproduce the official statement sent by the organization to our editorial office:
"Citizenship and Freedom was founded to defend the rights of association, peaceful assembly, and political participation in Cuba. Our mission is to ensure that every citizen can participate freely and safely in the public affairs of the country without facing persecution and criminalization.
We strive to foster an informed and active society aware of its civil and political rights, which are also human rights as established in Articles 20 and 21 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
We are aware of the challenges involved in the defense of civil and political rights in Cuba. We recognize that significant progress will not be achieved without a democratic transition. We work towards this goal, understanding that a full democratic transition will only be possible in a society that embraces democratic culture as a fundamental and daily aspect of its identity.
The launch of Citizenship and Freedom, just days before the third anniversary of the July 11 protests, is dedicated to honoring the bravery of the Cuban citizens who peacefully demonstrated to demand freedom, political participation, and civil rights. Three years on, we call for the immediate release of those who remain unjustly imprisoned for advocating for citizens' rights and liberty.
