Victor Alfonso Cedeño, the brilliant mind behind the popular animated series Dany y el Club de los Berracos and the beloved character Yesapín García, passed away this Monday in Miami after a long battle with cancer.
His wife, Claudia Elizabeth Ruíz García, confirmed the news on her Facebook profile. "Much light for your soul, my love. You were my companion, my love, and my friend," she wrote.
Victor, not only a distinguished audiovisual creator but also a member of the 27-N movement, arrived in Miami on a humanitarian visa to undergo treatment for chondrosarcoma, a type of cancer diagnosed in 2018 in Cuba. He underwent a grade three hemipelvectomy and radiation therapy; however, despite these radical treatments, the cancer returned in early 2021. In March of that year, he underwent another surgery, "this time with complex reconstructions due to surgical accidents," he explained in an interview upon his arrival in the United States.
In addition to the recurrence of the tumor, new tumors appeared in the area of the previous operation, and doctors informed him that his case was inoperable—the only possible treatment option in Cuba for this type of cancer.
Through a childhood friend of Victor's living in Miami, they managed to schedule an appointment at a medical center. Via video call, Victor was able to explain his case to the doctor and secure treatment.
Initially, everything was done via video call, and medication was sent to Cuba for him to take, but it became necessary for him to continue treatment in person.
Victor's death has touched many Cubans who have enjoyed the antics of Yesapín. Since the news of his illness, the Cuban creator received significant support for his visa process and treatment at the Sylvester Cancer Center, as well as financial assistance for his treatment through a GoFundMe campaign.
