Russia Launches Missile Strike on Children's Cancer Hospital in Kiev

Monday, July 8, 2024 by Isabella Sanchez

At least 36 people were killed by Russian missile attacks on various Ukrainian cities this Monday. Among the bombed locations was a children's cancer hospital situated in the capital, Kiev. Various global media outlets have reported on this latest genocide by Vladimir Putin's government against the Ukrainian people, considered one of the most brutal in months.

The Russian missiles hit the Ohmatdyt Children's Hospital, one of the main pediatric healthcare centers in the nation. Children, their families, and medical staff had to evacuate to other medical facilities, according to France 24.

“It is one of the most important not only in Ukraine but also in Europe, having saved and restored the health of thousands of children,” said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

“It was horrifying. I couldn’t breathe; I was trying to cover my baby. I was trying to cover him with his blanket so he could breathe,” detailed Svitlana Kravchenko, a survivor of the attack.

Zelensky testified that 40 missiles of various types targeted different cities, launched by the Russians.

On the social network X, Zelensky confirmed that there were fatalities and damage to infrastructure, commercial buildings, and homes. He also asserted that Russia cannot claim ignorance about the locations where their missiles fall, stating that they must “fully account for all their crimes: against people, against children, against humanity in general.”

Fragments of a missile struck another medical center in the capital, killing four people, emergency services reported two hours after the attack on the children's hospital.

NATO Leaders to Convene Amid Escalating Attacks

Monday’s attacks in Ukraine come a day before NATO leaders are set to meet in Washington for their annual summit, where they are expected to announce new measures to support the embattled country.

“I am appalled by the images of the attacks in Kiev, which also affected a children’s hospital. War crimes that must be condemned by the entire international community (...) The Italian government will continue to defend the sovereignty of Ukraine and its people,” stated Antonio Tajani, the Italian Foreign Minister, on the platform X.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned the attack on innocent children as the “most depraved of actions.”
