This Tuesday, Miguel Díaz-Canel flagged off the small delegations from Cuba set to compete in the upcoming Paris 2024 Olympics and Paralympics.

Greco-Roman wrestler Mijaín López, in the 130-kilogram division, received the flag on behalf of the 62 qualified athletes—the smallest group since Tokyo 1964—who will compete in the conventional athlete category. López, a four-time Olympic champion, will aim for his fifth gold medal in the French capital, a feat no other Cuban or athlete in his discipline has achieved.

Meanwhile, star athletes Omara Durand and Robiel Yankiel Sol accepted the flag for the disabled athletes, representing the 17 qualified competitors across six sports.

According to JIT, at the base of the José Martí Monument in Revolution Square, Havana, Olympic champion in classical style Luis Alberto Orta read the commitment on behalf of both delegations. "We will display dignity and total dedication, in line with the privilege of defending the lone star flag, so that once again the homeland can look upon us with pride," Orta declared, not forgetting to reiterate the oft-repeated praises of the late Fidel Castro's legacy.

Olympic Aspirations Amid Challenges

Cuba aims to finish among the top 20 countries in the medal tally and secure five titles in the conventional category, slated to take place from July 26 to August 11, according to sports authorities' forecasts.

In Tokyo 2020, Cuba won a total of 15 medals—seven gold, three silver, and five bronze—finishing in the 14th position. These results surpassed their performances from Beijing 2008 (three gold, 10 silver, and 17 bronze), London 2012 (five gold, seven silver, and 15 bronze), and Rio de Janeiro 2016 (five gold, two silver, and four bronze).

Despite the ongoing crisis in the country, Cuban Television announced it would broadcast the Paris 2024 Olympics. Sports commentator Pavel Otero, a spokesperson for the regime, shared the news on his Facebook page.

In a return to a more traditional style, Cuba will once again wear Adidas apparel for their participation in both events. The government ended its partnership with Puma, which had been in place since 2015. The decision to don Adidas gear was made public during a special gala in Paris, where the renowned company unveiled its new line of suits for the upcoming Olympic competitions.
