Americans Stranded in Varadero for Two Days Awaiting Miami Flight

Tuesday, July 9, 2024 by Mia Dominguez

A Cuban citizen has reported the poor service experienced at Juan Gualberto Gómez International Airport in Varadero after the flight to Miami with American Airlines was canceled. In a live broadcast, Daniel Pérez Portilla highlighted the desperation of several people stranded at the Varadero airport, including minors, according to the complainant.

“They left everyone here until midnight, then sent us to a hotel and brought us back in the morning,” Pérez Portilla expressed, also mentioning that they were not provided with any food. In the airport, facing the uncertainty of whether they could fly or not, there were also minors, adults, people in wheelchairs, and the elderly, the Cuban stated.

“What American Airlines is doing is a disrespect; it has become a mockery,” condemned the affected individual. In another post where he mentioned that he was already in Miami, Pérez Portilla wrote: “I did what I did because I don’t like abuse. I have children, and seeing those parents with their little girls sleeping in the airport chairs, exhausted, almost 36 hours is too much for an adult. Imagine for one of those little angels.”

The American airline American Airlines confirmed a few months ago its intention to increase flights from Miami to Havana, strengthening commercial and tourism ties between the two destinations. "Our goal is to achieve operational efficiency that supports continuous and effective operations," explained Jiménez.

The representative of the American airline emphasized that last year was significant as regular operations were consolidated, with 83 weekly flights from Miami to several Cuban destinations including Havana, Varadero, Santa Clara, Camagüey, Holguín, and Santiago de Cuba, using Boeing 737-800 and Airbus A319 aircraft.
