Thursday, July 11, 2024 by Daniel Colon

A group of activists held a vigil in front of the Cuban Embassy in Washington, commemorating the third anniversary of 11J and advocating for Cuba's freedom. During the vigil, they condemned the government's repression and the plight of political prisoners on the island. Thirteen minutes of silence were observed in honor of the Cubans killed by the regime.

Independent journalist Yosmany Mayeta shared videos on social media showcasing the organization of the protest and various moments from the demonstration outside the regime's diplomatic headquarters.

The event was organized by Center for a Free Cuba, Cuba Decide, the Heritage Foundation, the Patmos Institute, the Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation, and the Young America’s Foundation.

Remembering the 11J Protests and Tugboat "13 de Marzo" Tragedy

In addition to commemorating the massive protests of July 11, 2021, the vigil also marked the 30th anniversary of the sinking of the tugboat "13 de Marzo".

This July 11, other commemorative events will take place in Miami and other cities around the world. The Democracy Movement is organizing a demonstration this Thursday at 5:30 PM in front of the iconic Versailles restaurant at 8th Street and 35th Avenue in Southwest Miami.

The peaceful protests for Cuba's freedom not only remember the events of July 11 but also renew the call for international solidarity to end the dictatorship of Raúl Castro and Miguel Díaz-Canel and restore democracy to the Caribbean nation.
