Woman Sexually Assaulted by Fake Cuban Uber Driver, Police Report

Thursday, July 11, 2024 by Sophia Martinez

A 38-year-old Cuban man, identified as Alberto Angulo López, appeared in court facing charges of kidnapping and assault after allegedly posing as an Uber driver to pick up a young woman, only to grope her and refuse to take her home.

The incident dates back to February 28 of last year, when two women, after leaving a night club in Miami Beach at 4:30 AM, found that their car had been towed. In an interview with Telemundo 51, the victim recounted that she had a disagreement with her friend and decided to get into the car, trusting that it was an Uber driver.

The report did not specify if the young woman had requested the car through the app or if she simply trusted the driver’s identification. The woman stated that the driver initially set the destination to her home but started driving in a different direction, moving farther away.

During the ride, the man allegedly began to touch her private parts and asked her if she had ever "tried the Cuban member" before. "I told myself: I have two options, either find a way out of here or wait for him to rape me and hope he would then take pity on me and let me go home," the Hispanic woman recounted.

The victim managed to share her real-time location with a known person and warned Alberto Angulo that this person would call the police if she did not reach her destination. Eventually, Angulo López dropped her off in Homestead, a different location than agreed upon, demanding money before leaving.

"I don't know if he thought I would want to meet him again, but he gave me his number for a Zelle transfer because I sent him everything through Zelle... He gave me his number and even made me follow him on social media," the woman added.

The authorities gathered evidence leading to the arrest of Alberto Angulo López and his court appearance. The most serious charge against him is kidnapping, a first-degree felony that can result in life imprisonment.

Alberto Angulo López remains in custody without bail as the judicial process unfolds.
