Cuban feminist platforms have confirmed two new feminicides in the country, raising the number of violent deaths of women to 30 so far this year. The gender violence observatories YoSíTeCreo en Cuba (YSTCC) and Alas Tensas (OGAT) verified this Thursday the murder of Damaris Rondón, 48, which took place in a rural community on the Isla de la Juventud.

The crime was committed by her partner, who subsequently took his own life. The assault occurred on June 22, but the victim passed away on June 29. "Our condolences go out to her two surviving children, one of whom is a minor, as well as to other family members, friends, and the religious community to which both the victim and the perpetrator belonged," Alas Tensas stated on Facebook.

Internet user Irma Broek detailed that Damaris had been married to her husband for over 30 years. They had two young children and frequently attended church. "Although they had some separations due to his infidelity, they were viewed by everyone as a peaceful, well-liked, and respected family, originally from El Sitio in Manzanillo, Granma, but later moved to Isla de la Juventud," she explained on Facebook.

A neighbor recounted that the man, named Luis Yero, waited for their two children to leave the house, one to her nursing studies and the other to his job. He struck his wife on the head with a bat, believing she was dead, left the house, and then hanged himself. Damaris was taken to the hospital but died four days later.

The other feminicide had been reported by both independent media and regime-affiliated social media profiles. It involved the murder of Yunaisi Bruzón Almaguer, 54, a resident of Holguín, who died on June 23 after suffering sexual violence at the hands of an individual with no verified connection to her. Yunaisi was the mother of a minor.

The platforms also mourned the murder of an elderly man on July 8 in Suferry, Ciego de Ávila, due to gender-related motives. Additionally, three women suffered varying degrees of injuries in the incident and are still hospitalized.
