Three members of a Cuban family living in Florida lost their lives in a tragic car accident last Wednesday in Boynton Beach; only their youngest child survived. The victims were Alex Cordoves, 46; his wife Grechy Yanela Almaguer Pérez, 43, both originally from Holguín; and their 10-year-old son Diego. The sole survivor is their two-year-old son, Fabio.

The family was traveling in a 2010 Volkswagen Jetta when they were struck by a speeding 2020 Lexus RX350 driven by 54-year-old Dawn Howard. According to the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office (PBSO), county firefighters declared Grechy Yanela dead at the scene. The older child was rushed to Delray Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead. Alex, who was driving the car, suffered an internal decapitation, a condition where the neck separates from the spinal cord, and he is not expected to survive.

Young Fabio suffered a fractured right tibia and is currently hospitalized at Delray Medical Center. Meanwhile, the driver responsible for the crash sustained minor injuries and was admitted to the same hospital under police watch.

Incident Details and Legal Actions

According to the PBSO report, reviewed by CBS12, the woman resisted going to the bathroom in her hospital room with an officer. She attempted to evade and even struck the officer on the wrist. Consequently, she was restrained and handcuffed to the bed and has been charged with assaulting a law enforcement officer.

Family members of the deceased have set up a GoFundMe account to raise funds for the funerals. Arsenio Almaguer, Grechy Yanela’s brother, disclosed that the woman responsible for the crash was drunk and rear-ended their car.

"She caused the immediate death of my sister and nephew. My brother-in-law is brain dead, only breathing through a machine. This has left behind our little Fabio, my two-year-old nephew who survived and is fighting for his life, which will never be the same without his parents," he stated.

"This unfortunate car accident instantly shattered this family, and I would like to give them an honorable farewell. My sister was a loving and dedicated mother who lived for her family, which is my family even now that they are no longer here," he added.

The campaign aims to raise $15,000. At the time of writing, $9,410 has been donated.

"Please help with any generous amount, or share this post so my family can have the funeral they deserve," pleaded the campaign organizer.
