Meta, the social media giant, announced on Saturday that it will lift some of the restrictions placed on the Facebook and Instagram accounts of former U.S. President Donald Trump.

Trump's accounts were indefinitely suspended after he praised the individuals who stormed the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021. In early 2023, Meta reinstated his accounts but stated it would monitor Trump's posts for further violations that could result in another suspension ranging from one month to two years.

Meta's New Decision Amid Presidential Race

However, now in the context of the U.S. presidential race, the company has decided to eliminate this additional monitoring, asserting that the American people should "be able to hear from both candidates on an equal footing," as cited by La Vanguardia.

"In assessing our responsibility to allow political expression, we believe the American people should be able to hear from the presidential candidates on an equal basis," Meta stated in an updated blog post.

Donald Trump, who is running against current U.S. President Joe Biden to regain the White House, will no longer be subject to additional monitoring on his Facebook and Instagram accounts, according to Meta.

The decision has sparked criticism from some social media experts, who have long argued that Meta and other platforms do not adequately moderate political content, including that of candidates.

Trump was also banned from Twitter, now called X, in 2021. Billionaire Elon Musk restored his account shortly after acquiring the company in 2022, although Trump has only posted once since then.

This policy change by Meta comes at a crucial time as Americans prepare for the upcoming presidential elections and underscores the importance of allowing equitable access to political expression on social media platforms.

Several hours after Meta's announcement on Saturday, Trump was attacked during a rally in Pennsylvania, resulting in an injury to his ear.
