President Joe Biden announced on Sunday that an independent investigation will be conducted to determine what happened during Saturday's attack on Donald Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania. Biden made brief comments at the White House and stated that he has requested a "thorough and swift" investigation. He urged the nation "not to make assumptions" about the motives or political affiliation of the assailant, according to the AP news agency.

The President also directed the Secret Service to review "all security measures surrounding the Republican National Convention, which begins on Monday in Milwaukee," the report said.

In his remarks, Biden noted that he and First Lady Jill Biden were praying for the family of the individual who was killed while attending the campaign event. "He was a father. He was protecting his family from the bullets. May God care for him," he said.

Biden added that he had a "short but good" conversation with Trump on Saturday night and expressed his genuine relief that the former president "is okay and recovering."

Biden, who is running for re-election with the Democratic Party in the upcoming November elections, addressed the shooting incident that left former President and his electoral opponent, Donald Trump, injured. In a statement released by the White House, Biden acknowledged the events that took place at a rally in Pennsylvania earlier that day.

"I am glad to know he is safe and doing well. I am praying for him, his family, and everyone who was at the rally as we await more information," the current U.S. President stated.

"Everyone must condemn" the violent scenes in Pennsylvania, Biden said, criticizing what happened on Saturday afternoon. "I have tried to reach Donald. He is with his doctors," the President mentioned in his brief address.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) identified the shooter who attempted to assassinate Donald Trump during a rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday afternoon.

"The FBI has identified Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, as the individual involved in the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump on July 13 in Butler, Pennsylvania," the agency said in a statement.
