Newly Arrived Cubans Experience American Food for the First Time

Monday, July 15, 2024 by Felix Ortiz

Daniela (@siempre.ellaxo on TikTok), a Cuban native, shared a video on social media documenting her family's first experience trying food in the United States. After posting emotional footage of their arrival at the airport and their first time visiting a store or casino, she showcased her family’s reactions to tasting American food, ranging from typical fast food dishes to fruits and other items that are either unavailable or prohibitively expensive in Cuba.

Their facial expressions while savoring these dishes speak volumes about the joy each flavor brings. In just two days, the post has garnered over 32,000 likes and more than 1,000 comments. The reactions have varied, from surprise and curiosity to empathy and solidarity.

Many users expressed astonishment at the lack of access to certain foods in Cuba: "Forgive my ignorance, are there no McDonald's or Burger King or fast food in Cuba?" and "Sorry, I didn’t know this. Can someone explain more about Cuba? Are certain foods not sold, banned, or what?"

There were also numerous expressions of empathy, understanding, and happiness for the family: "I'm surprised by the number of negative comments from people. In Cuba, thousands dream of trying that food because it’s what they always see in commercials, good or not. They are fulfilling that dream"; "It's both beautiful and sad at the same time. Sometimes we waste so much here, and in other places, they would love to have even a little"; "It’s heartbreaking for our people; I hope that one day children can taste all the delicious things available here"; "It's lovely to see how something as simple as a hamburger can make someone so happy. I love their reaction"; and "It feels wonderful to see their expressions. The same happened with my husband when he came to my country and tried everything for the first time," others added.

Many highlighted the stark contrast between life in Cuba and other countries and lamented the hardships faced by many on the island: "I only ask God that every Cuban can live with dignity as a human being"; "I’m Cuban and came here at 11, I’m 33 now, and I will always understand this. Many people have everything and appreciate nothing. Blessings to the family"; "The sad reality of life in Cuba," "It makes me both sad and happy. It’s lovely to see them enjoy," and "I’m so glad they can enjoy all the things they lack in Cuba. One day they will be free in the name of God," commented others.

Understanding the Food Availability Issues in Cuba

This section answers some common questions regarding the food availability issues that many Cubans face, as highlighted in the article.

Are fast food chains like McDonald's and Burger King available in Cuba?

No, international fast food chains such as McDonald's and Burger King do not have a presence in Cuba. The country's economic and political situation restricts the availability and presence of such brands.

Why is there limited access to certain foods in Cuba?

Political and economic policies in Cuba, along with the U.S. embargo, contribute to the scarcity and high cost of many food items. This results in limited availability of a variety of foods that are common in other countries.

How do Cubans typically react when they first try food from other countries?

Cubans often express joy and amazement when trying foods that are easily accessible in other countries but rare or non-existent in Cuba. This reaction is usually due to the novelty of the experience and the fulfillment of long-held desires.
