Cuban Slang: "Take a Five" and Other Common Expressions

Monday, July 15, 2024 by Ethan Navarro

The popular Cuban TikToker @alejandro_bujan recently shared a new video brimming with humor and authenticity, highlighting some of the expressions Cubans use to refer to time or the duration of things. With his characteristic style, Alejandro invites viewers at the beginning of the video to "take a 10" to enjoy his list, which he promises to explain "in no time."

In the video, the young Cuban discusses phrases that are part of everyday speech in Cuba. For instance, if something is extremely old, people might say it’s "from the year of the bomb" or "from the year of the bugle." Another quirky expression he mentions is "that's from when Martí took the photo for the peso."

Alejandro also acknowledges the unique creativity of Cuban mothers when it comes to describing prolonged or indefinite punishments, using phrases like "you're grounded until I remember" or "until frogs grow hair."
