Donald Trump Officially Nominated as Republican Presidential Candidate at Convention

Monday, July 15, 2024 by Ernesto Alvarez

After receiving enough delegate votes at the Republican National Convention, former President Donald Trump has been officially nominated as his party's candidate for the upcoming presidential elections in the United States. Although Trump has been the presumptive candidate for months, his nomination was formalized on Monday in Milwaukee, where the Republican event is taking place.

Trump's Third Consecutive Presidential Bid

Thus, Trump, 78, will be competing in his third consecutive election, having won in 2016 and lost in 2020. He will again face current President Joe Biden on November 5. Trump reached the necessary threshold with the votes from his home state of Florida, as reported by Telemundo 51.

Since Super Tuesday, held on March 5, Trump had been the sole candidate of his party heading into this week's Convention. On Monday, the business mogul also announced his running mate for the presidential race. Through Truth Social, he revealed that Ohio Senator J.D. Vance, a 39-year-old who is also an entrepreneur and author, would be the vice-presidential candidate.

“After extensive deliberations and consideration, and given the tremendous talent of many others, I have decided that the most suitable person to assume the role of Vice President of the United States is Senator J.D. Vance of the Great State of Ohio,” Trump stated.

Convention and Security Incident

The Convention, which began with a prayer and the national anthem, will run until Thursday and has given Trump a central role, especially after the attack he suffered last Saturday during a rally in Pennsylvania. In the incident, Trump was grazed by a bullet in his right ear.

The attacker, a 20-year-old identified as Thomas Matthew Crooks, fired from the rooftop of a building about 140 meters from the stage where Trump was speaking. After being shot down by Secret Service agents, a semi-automatic AR-15 rifle was found near his body.

At the event, former firefighter Corey Comperatore, 50, died after using his body as a shield to protect his wife and daughter from the bullets. Two other individuals were injured and are in stable condition. They were identified as David Dutch, 57, from New Kensington, Pennsylvania, and James Copenhaver, 74, from Moon Township, Pennsylvania, according to the Pennsylvania State Police.
