Jessenia Queralt Massola Sablón, daughter of the late Cuban actor Carlos Massola, who passed away suddenly two weeks ago in Havana, has called for peace in her father's memory. The 18-year-old expressed her discomfort with some of the things that have been published about her father on social media.
"There are many things on social media that I haven't liked. I'm not in good health, and this has completely destabilized me," she clarified in a video published by the independent media outlet CubaNet.
Jessenia shared that she suffers from conditions such as dyslexia and hemolytic anemia, which her father helped manage by providing vitamins, other medications, and dietary support.
Gratitude and Clarifications
She took the opportunity to thank her father's friends who were concerned about him and continue to support her. She also clarified that neither she nor her family have any interest in her father's belongings.
"We have no interest in anything, especially not in my father's things; the only valuable thing was him, the man who supported me in every way," she assured.
The young woman mentioned that she lives humbly and works "alongside my mother and sister to support ourselves and maintain our home."
Currently, the ashes of the actor, who died from hypovolemic shock in his Cerro apartment at the age of 62 on June 3rd, are in his daughter's home. This was confirmed by Bertha Mariela Sablón Roque, Carlos Massola's ex-partner and Jessenia's mother.
"The ashes are safely with us. The confusion arose from miscommunication between Ms. Gladys Escandell and me. She was asked to leave Carlos' ashes at the house, and she sent them with someone who brought them to me later. At the time of the audio recording, the ashes were on their way to my house, where they are now, with his daughter, where they belong," she explained to Cubanet.
Sablón Roque added that at some point, the ashes would be taken to the sea, although that was not Carlos Massola's last wish, as he never expected to die in Cuba. She mentioned that his desire was to move to the United States, but his parole never arrived.
Massola had become a controversial figure for the regime due to his denunciations of government abuses, and his death was entirely ignored by Cuban cultural authorities. No official cultural institution or state media outlet acknowledged his passing.
Despite the silence from official channels, Massola received tributes from many of his colleagues and the public, who appreciated the courage he displayed in voicing his political views and criticizing the government's inefficiency, corruption, human rights violations, and repression of freedoms.
