Wednesday, July 17, 2024 by Alex Smith

Miami International Airport is set to unveil a new state-of-the-art cargo hub that will be the "first of its kind in the hemisphere." The facility will feature four floors, boosting the airport's overall capacity by at least 50% (a minimum of 4.5 million tons), thanks to a $400 million investment.

"With the construction of this unprecedented and cutting-edge air cargo facility, the sky's the limit for MIA to lead the global air cargo industry following years of extraordinary growth since 2020," stated Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava.

The building, named the Vertical Integrated Cargo Community (VICC), will span nearly 800,000 square feet (74,420 square meters) across 11 acres of land. Completion is expected by 2029. Over the next five years, the project will create 8,500 temporary jobs, resulting in $500 million in wages.

The new facility's employment impact will be felt within the Cuban community in Miami, as the airport employs a significant number of Cuban immigrants. The VICC will increase the airport's total cargo capacity by at least 50%, leading to 2,500 new permanent jobs, which will generate $512 million in rental and commercial revenue for the county's Aviation Department over the 40-year agreement.

Additionally, at least 60% of the design and construction companies involved in the project will be based in the county, and these firms will hire registered small businesses. "This is fantastic news for our community and our economy. MIA is our largest economic engine, creating thousands of jobs for our residents and significant income for many of our leading industries, from tourism to small businesses," added the mayor.
