Cuban activists from the citizen initiative "Huellas" provided a donation-based baby basket this Monday to a financially struggling teenager in Santiago de Cuba who faced a high-risk pregnancy.
Bricella Hernández expressed her gratitude on Facebook to all those who supported the initiative, which facilitated the delivery of donations to a 13-year-old first-time mother who had a high-risk pregnancy. "The HUELLAS team, led by our friend Johanna Jolá Álvarez and the young people who founded this wonderful group, thank you a thousand times," she noted.
Bricella also thanked Marilín Cruzata, "a driver at the Havana-Santiago de Cuba bus terminal, who helped us transport the donations for pregnant women in extreme situations," she added.
The activist shared a gallery of photos showing the young mother holding her baby, as well as the donations she received in Santiago de Cuba.
Earlier this month, activist Johanna Jolá Álvarez, leader of the Huellas initiative, requested help on Facebook for the teenager. "The HUELLAS team calls for solidarity to help a 13-year-old girl who is about to give birth. It's a social case in the province that requires everyone's support and contribution," she stated at that time.
Solidarity among Cubans often emerges when poverty cases are highlighted, especially those involving mothers and their children.
One Cuban mother, so impoverished that she has to collect trash with her daughter at a dump in Havana, received aid from compassionate individuals moved by her plight. Yaimara Quesada Guillén, a Facebook user, shared the woman's story after seeing her rummaging through garbage with her child, sparking a small solidarity campaign for the mother and daughter.
However, Cuban solidarity isn't limited to needy mothers on the island. TikToker Dairon Cano highlighted recent donations of essential items from his followers for a young Cuban mother who lost everything in a fire in Miami. "This is the real Cuban who represents us. We get along, we help each other, and we support one another," Dairon said gratefully upon receiving one of the donations.
