Cuban-American congress members María Elvira Salazar and Carlos Giménez are optimistic that Donald Trump's return to the presidency, should he secure a second term, could spell the end of communism in Cuba. Speaking to Martí Noticias, Salazar and Giménez shared their hopes that the former Republican president's re-election would lead to the downfall of the island's dictatorship.

"I feel terribly for the crooks running the island of Cuba, such as (Miguel) Díaz-Canel and his cronies. I see them in a very bad place. This regime will collapse during Trump's tenure," Salazar said on Wednesday from the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee. She warned that "the regime is already hanging by a thread." The country lacks food, medicine, electricity, and hope. According to Salazar, all that's needed is for Cubans to lose their fear of fighting for freedom, and the nation could quickly flourish like Hong Kong, Singapore, or Taiwan.

Carlos Giménez, for his part, believes that Trump's second term would bring a tougher government policy against the Cuban regime as well as the dictatorships in Venezuela and Nicaragua. "We will have different ambassadors, and we will focus more on Latin America and also on South America, which has been neglected for too many years," the congressman said.

"I have been in the United States for over 60 years. I have never returned to Cuba. It's time. We need freedom; we know that Cuba is also the head of the snake in our region, and we need to eliminate that regime not only for the Cuban people but also for the security of the United States," Giménez added.

This past weekend, Cuban-American congress members from South Florida expressed their solidarity with former President Donald Trump after he was injured in a shooting during a campaign rally in Pennsylvania.
