A young Cuban model residing in Bolivia has been involved in a motorcycle accident, and his family and friends are urgently seeking financial assistance to cover his medical expenses. The young man, named José, has already undergone two surgeries and is scheduled for another one next week.
"He is from Cuba and is in the country only with his brother, who is also very young," said Guardia Carrasco Yescenia, a businesswoman and employee at Mister Teen International, on Facebook. "We are collecting funds to help with his medical bills. Any financial contribution is welcome," she added.
José's mother, Yoleinnia Salom, who lives in the United States, explained that the upcoming surgery on her son's leg involves the removal of pins and the insertion of an intramedullary tibial nail. "I have already mentioned that healthcare in Bolivia is very expensive, even for us living in the U.S. It is not enough to cover such costly treatments. The nail alone costs between $900 and $1,000," she detailed on her Facebook profile.
Yoleinnia clarified that although many people have helped them, almost 80% of everything José needs—syringes, medications, antibiotics, gauze—has to be purchased. "They give us the prescription, and we must buy it at any nearby pharmacy. That is the procedure in Bolivian hospitals," she noted.
The young man was initially operated on for a pneumothorax. He also suffered an open fracture in his leg, for which external rods were placed.
The family has shared donation methods on Facebook. In the United States, contributions can be made via Zelle to 7867935330. Another option is to send money through Western Union to Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia, to his other son, Jorge Enmanuel Destrades Salom.
