Mastermind Behind Cuban Dentist's Murder in Hialeah Appears in Court

Friday, July 19, 2024 by Michael Hernandez

José Ledesma, the mastermind behind the 2019 murder of Cuban dentist Carmen Ramírez, finally appeared in Miami-Dade criminal court this Wednesday, more than four and a half years after the crime.

On November 18, 2019, 60-year-old Carmen Ramírez was climbing the stairs to her dental office in Hialeah when a man named Ralph Benjamin shot her six times before fleeing in a black BMW 5 Series driven by Héctor Ledesma, José Ledesma's brother.

Ramírez lay on the ground until paramedics arrived and provided first aid. Due to the severity of her injuries, she was airlifted to Jackson Memorial Hospital, where she underwent surgery and received a blood transfusion.

The bullets caused injuries to Ramírez's face, neck, chest, and limbs. She succumbed to her injuries on December 19, 2019, a month after being hospitalized. Surveillance cameras that captured the attack provided crucial evidence for investigators.

Héctor Ledesma and Ralph Benjamin were arrested two days after the murder at Miami International Airport while attempting to flee to the Virgin Islands, Benjamin’s country of origin.

During a press conference, police confirmed that the arrests were made possible thanks to the security camera footage and the swift response from the investigation teams.

Dark Details Emerge in Investigation

As the investigation progressed, dark details about José Ledesma's past came to light. In 2015, Carmen Ramírez had been a victim of identity theft involving José Ledesma. The fraud cost Ramírez and her dental practice over $40,000.

At the time of the murder, Ledesma was facing trial for this crime, with a possible sentence of 3 to 5 years if convicted. Carmen Ramírez was the main witness in that case, giving Ledesma a motive to eliminate her.

However, José Ledesma was released on bail in November 2019, shortly after Ramírez was shot. Although Hialeah detectives immediately suspected that Ledesma had orchestrated the attack from jail, Orlando prosecutors did not revoke his bail or return him to prison.

Several weeks after the Hialeah shooting, Ledesma raped a 15-year-old girl who became pregnant. This new crime sent him back to jail, where he faced three separate criminal trials in Orlando, in addition to the ongoing murder investigation in Miami-Dade County.

During his court appearance this Wednesday, where he was charged with first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit first-degree murder, Ledesma was held without bail.
