A devastating fire has left the García family homeless in Miami. The tragedy struck early Tuesday morning when the homeowner was awakened by the frantic screams of her neighbors.
Midalis García, the owner of the affected trailer, had undergone knee surgery that day. She arrived home, took some painkillers, and went to sleep. She lives alone with her 90-year-old mother, who suffers from Alzheimer's. Around 4:00 a.m., a neighbor woke her up shouting, "Fire, fire!"
Upon waking, Midalis found her room filled with smoke. Despite being under the influence of painkillers, she managed to escape her room just before a window exploded. "Thank God, because if I had stayed inside, the fire would have come right at me," Midalis recounted to AmericaTeVe Miami.
"I then grabbed the hose, turned it on full blast, and started putting out the fire. I yelled at my neighbors to turn on their hoses or throw buckets of water," she said.
The mobile home, located in a trailer park near 127th Avenue and Southwest 9th Street in Tamiami, suffered significant damage. Midalis has lived there for 25 years and now has nowhere else to go. "The firefighters wanted to tear down my walls, but I refused. I told them this was all I had," she explained.
Midalis's neighbors have been a tremendous support, helping to clean up the debris and taking care of her, weakened by her surgery, and her mother. However, the material losses amount to thousands of dollars, and the family needs costly repairs they cannot afford.
Authorities are investigating the cause of the fire, though a neighbor claims to have seen an electric bike charger explode. Fortunately, there were no human casualties.
To help the García family, a GoFundMe page has been created where anyone can make a donation to aid in the recovery of their home.
