The University of Medical Sciences of Havana has terminated the employment of Cuban academic and anthropologist Jenny Pantoja Torres, who is closely associated with intellectual Alina Bárbara López. The Observatory of Academic Freedom reported that Pantoja Torres, who was under contract at the Miguel Enríquez Faculty, was dismissed despite positive evaluations of her teaching performance. The dismissal has been described as an act of "censorship" by the State Security apparatus.

According to the report, the head of the Department of Marxism and History had assured Pantoja Torres days before that her services would not be terminated. However, it appears the decision was influenced by State Security pressure aimed at ousting "uncomfortable" intellectuals. The Cuban anthropologist and historian engages in monthly peaceful protests with López, advocating for the release of political prisoners on the island and demanding structural and political changes.

Pantoja Torres has faced multiple instances of repression by State Security. Just eight days ago, she was placed under house arrest in Havana for over 48 hours. An agent from the repressive body appeared at her home, preventing her from leaving without any judicial order. Additionally, a police cordon of at least eight political police officers was deployed around her residence to stop her from conducting her monthly protest on the 18th alongside professor Alina Bárbara López.

"Today, July 18, marks a year since Alina B. López Hernández and I started our monthly demonstrations. A year ago today, I traveled to Matanzas for the first time with this objective," Pantoja Torres wrote on her Facebook profile. Just over a month ago, both Pantoja Torres and López Hernández were brutally beaten during a detention while traveling from Matanzas to Havana for their regular protest.

Since that incident, Jenny Pantoja has been under house arrest pending trial for the alleged crime of "assault." She was also confined to her home during the third anniversary of the July 11th protests (11J).
