Cuban singer-songwriter Silvio Rodríguez, a steadfast supporter of the government who has recently criticized the stagnation of its economic model and the repression of peaceful protests, has shared a statement reaffirming his loyalty to socialism, which he considers a superior system.
Just days after harshly criticizing the government's economic policies, which he claimed are destroying the country, the troubadour appears concerned about the impact of his words in independent media. He has written another article to reaffirm his commitment to the regime.
"Recently, some media outlets have been reproducing opinions about the Cuban reality that I've expressed on my blog 'Segunda Cita' and are venturing to insinuate that I am changing my principles. Pure manipulation," he said. "Those opposed to the political process known as the Cuban Revolution say I am changing, as if it were possible for me to regret my life," he added.
The founder of the Nueva Trova movement recounted how he has always been integrated into the revolution in one way or another, even from childhood in the late 1950s, "when everyone on my street knew that the bakery sold July 26th Movement bonds, and if we saw a policeman coming, we would go warn the baker."
Despite his defense of the process, he claims he never wanted to be a member of the Party because "I find it difficult to follow orders without question." However, he did accept the position of deputy in the National Assembly for 15 years, since when it was offered to him in 1993, during the toughest period of the Special Period, "it would have been cowardly to continue refusing."
Later, at the age of 60, he requested to leave the Parliament and also to retire from work, "because I have never tolerated bureaucracy."
At 77 years old, the composer of "Ojalá" and "El Necio" asserts that he remains essentially the same: "social justice without equalitarianism, science as a guide, and a self-critical heart."
"I still believe that socialism has better human possibilities than capitalism; but it will have to be a truly superior socialism, as much has been said and sung, even if we have to use 'blunt tools' until we are capable of better energy. Down with dogmas. Long live freedom," he concluded.
