The Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSC) in the state of Quintana Roo, Mexico, has announced the rescue of six Cuban migrants—four men and two women—who were being held captive in Cancún, located in the Benito Juárez municipality.
The agency detailed that the operation was launched following a report to the emergency number 911, where an individual alerted authorities that "her friend, along with four men and another woman, were being held against their will." Officers immediately proceeded to the specified location on "18 Poniente Street, between 105 and 103, in Supermanzana 94, Manzana 19, Lot 24."
"Upon arrival, the officers found a green and white house with a black wrought-iron gate. From the outside, they heard cries for help. The officers entered the home and, upon opening one of the rooms, found six individuals who quickly rushed out seeking assistance," the report described.
The Cuban migrants informed the authorities that "a man, always wearing a ski mask, had been keeping them captive." They further described that their captor threatened them and forced them to stay inside the house during his visits.
The identities of the Cubans have not been disclosed. They received immediate medical attention after the rescue and were transported to the facilities of the Specialized Prosecutor's Office for Combating Crimes Against Migrants to begin the necessary procedures and ensure their safety.
Residents near the house declined to speak with the authorities.
As of the publication of this article, no further details about the case have been released.
In recent years, an increasing number of Cubans have fallen victim to human trafficking networks in their attempt to reach the southern border of the United States.
