Two icons of women's volleyball, Cuban Mireya Luis and Russian Elizaveta Tishchenko, recently reunited in Paris. Both retired elite athletes attended the Olympic event, enjoying the spectacle of the world's top sports talents, much like they did in their prime.

In the Facebook group "PERU VOLEY," user Tito Mio shared a photo of the two former players and old rivals, smiling happily in front of the Eiffel Tower.

Memorable Olympic Encounters

The two athletes faced each other in two Olympics during their active careers: Atlanta 1996 and Sydney 2000. Mireya Luis, a 56-year-old from Camagüey, is recognized as one of the greatest volleyball players of all time. She was a member of the national team for 18 consecutive years and participated in three Olympics: Barcelona 1992, Atlanta 1996, and Sydney 2000, winning gold medals at all three events.

On the other hand, Yelizaveta Tishchenko, now 49, debuted with the Soviet national team in 1991. She participated in Atlanta 1996 (where Russia finished fourth), Sydney 2000 (where they won silver after being defeated by the Cubans), and Athens 2004, where they also won silver and Cuba took the bronze.

Several admirers wished them well in the post. "Unparalleled. The best attacker and the best slide," commented a Peruvian fan. "Great Mireya. She didn’t let the Russians win during their glory years," recalled an elderly Cuban woman. "Mireya Luis, the best and from Camagüey," proudly expressed a fellow countrywoman.
