Kamala Harris Raises $200 Million in First Week of Campaign

Vice President Kamala Harris has achieved a significant milestone by raising $200 million in her first week of campaigning, bringing her closer to securing the Democratic Party nomination for the November elections. Harris' team announced on Sunday that a majority of the donations (66%) came from first-time contributors in the 2024 election cycle, who sent their money after President Joe Biden exited the race.

Michael Tyler, the campaign's communication director, stated in a memo that "the momentum and energy behind Vice President Harris are real," predicting that "this election will be very close and will be decided by a small number of voters in just a few states." Eight days after taking over from Biden, the 59-year-old attorney has amassed around 170,000 volunteers to support her campaign.

JD Vance, running mate of Donald Trump, acknowledged during an event in Waite Park, Minnesota, that the Vice President "has received a small boost since her announcement," though he predicted it would soon fade. Last week, Kamala raised $90 million in just 24 hours, reinforcing the belief within her party that no one can challenge her effectively.

These $90 million were largely from small contributions, although she also enjoys the backing of major business figures, famous artists, and high-ranking members of her party. According to the New York Times, her campaign reported $81 million on the first day of her candidacy, thanks to donations from 888,000 people, 60% of whom were first-time donors.

Harris has the endorsement of prominent figures such as Barack Obama, who, along with his wife Michelle, called Harris to announce their support in her bid to keep Democrats in the White House.

"We told her that we believe she will be a fantastic president of the United States and that she has our full support. In this critical moment for our country, we will do everything possible to ensure she wins in November," the former president stated on his Twitter account.
