Cuban Flag Torn Down in Venezuela During Election Protests

Tuesday, July 30, 2024 by Robert Castillo

Venezuelans, angered by the apparent theft of their presidential elections, have taken drastic measures in their protests. Following the controversial re-election of dictator Nicolás Maduro, demonstrators tore down the Cuban flag from a public square. Groups of young opposition supporters, who have been actively demanding the release of the true election results from last Sunday, also destroyed a statue of Hugo Chávez, expressing their discontent with Cuba's support for the chavista regime.

A video circulating online shows several young people climbing a flagpole in what appears to be a park, violently ripping down the Cuban insignia that flew at the top. After throwing it to the ground, they chanted, "No, we don't want it." The Cuban regime has long supported its Venezuelan ally through advisory roles and the infiltration of military personnel and enforcers.

Protests Escalate with Chávez Statue Toppled

Recently, concerns have grown over the rising popular support for the opposition duo of former diplomat Edmundo González and María Corina Machado. In an escalation of protests against the election results that declared Nicolás Maduro the winner, Venezuelans on Monday toppled a statue of Chávez.

In Coro, Falcón state, protesters gathered in the Plaza Hugo Chávez, an iconic location for chavismo, and pulled down a three-meter-high statue that had served as a landmark for political events in the region. The police attempted to disperse the demonstrators, leading to clashes between officers and the public.

The protests have been driven by the decision to declare Maduro the winner, a move that has been contested, particularly because Edmundo González was clearly leading in the polls. In the nation's capital, Caracas, people have taken to the streets demanding Maduro's removal, citing widespread electoral fraud.

Since February, Maduro had ominously warned that he would win the elections "by fair means or foul." The ongoing unrest highlights the deep divisions and dissatisfaction within Venezuela regarding the current regime and its handling of the electoral process.
