A security camera in Melrose Park, located in the city of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, captured a coyote wandering the area in the early hours of the morning at the beginning of July, causing alarm among residents, especially after a subsequent incident.

James Thomas, a local resident, informed Local 10 that his small chihuahua, Big Boi, was brutally attacked by a coyote just a few blocks from his home. Thomas described the moment as terrifying, explaining how he desperately tried to save his pet. "I was petrified," said Thomas, who considered Big Boi like a son, as they had been together for ten years.

However, this is not an isolated case. In May, also in Broward County, but in the city of Miramar, another similar incident occurred. Adrian Meléndez, a 12-year-old, witnessed three coyotes attacking and taking away his poodle-maltese mix dog named Puffy.

Residents of the city of Wilton Manors have also reported an increase in coyote sightings, even in broad daylight, raising concerns about the safety of children walking to school when classes resume soon.

According to Local 10, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission will meet with the city of Wilton Manors this Tuesday night to address these concerns, and measures to manage the situation and protect residents and their pets are expected to be discussed.

Years ago, coyote sightings in various counties of Florida caused alarm due to the growing population of these animals in the state. The animals seemed to feel at home in the changing landscapes of Southwest Miami-Dade, Hollywood, Dania Beach, and Sunrise, among other recent reports. Authorities reported that coyotes were even chasing the feral cat population as far south as Key Largo, demonstrating how adaptable they are.
