Dozens of neighbors and friends of a 19-year-old from the Mantilla neighborhood in Havana gathered this Wednesday to pay a heartfelt tribute to "El Guaji," as he was affectionately known by those close to him.
Several videos shared on the Facebook group Somos Mantilla show how dozens of local residents came together at the intersection of Mendoza and Rosel streets to honor "El Guaji." Some were even seen in tears.
Attendees decorated the area appropriately for the occasion and played music to remember the young man. Alongside a photo of him, they placed flowers and personal items to bid farewell to the deceased, who appeared to be very beloved in his community, judging by the hundreds of comments expressing shock and sorrow over his untimely death.
While few details have emerged about the incident, it has been confirmed that the young man died from a knife attack. "Defending a friend. He was stabbed in the heart and passed away," mentioned a user on the Facebook group in response to numerous questions from members.
Another commenter specified that the incident occurred "at the beach," while a third noted that "he was neither a troublemaker nor involved in any bad activities."
The young man, who lived on Mendoza Street in the Havana municipality of Arroyo Naranjo, was raised by his grandmother, as his mother passed away when he was very young, according to several people who knew him.
A source close to the deceased revealed that his murderer has not yet been caught by the police. The alleged assailant is believed to live in the Cerro municipality, also in Havana.
