Postal workers at the offices of Correos de Cuba in the Isle of Youth have received bicycles to help "advance the company," according to a Cuban state official.

The transportation delivery took place on July 31, during which Eddyt Castro Rodríguez, the director of Correos in the special Cuban municipality, reminded the workers to "take care of the means acquired."

She also urged postal workers to increase the amount of Social Security and Assistance payments, home services, and newspaper subscriptions. "Now, with the means of transportation, services at the units can be strengthened," reported the official newspaper Periódico Victoria.

Ariel Molina Amador, a commercial representative of the company in the area, promised that whistles would also be provided, although he admitted that "they are still being sourced." He mentioned that the bicycles delivered are of higher quality than those from previous years.

The lack of postal workers in various parts of the country is influenced by migration and low wages. Despite the transportation provisions, the government does not supply spare tires, bicycle maintenance, or protective gear such as raincoats or work tools like calculators.

Housewives, the elderly, people with reduced mobility, and those caring for the sick are the primary groups affected by the shortage of postal workers in urban areas.

In 2022, a report by the official newspaper Invasor from Ciego de Ávila highlighted that most postal workers in that region were elderly men. They suffered physical wear from cycling around the city on old bikes, and their salaries, due to inflation, provided little for their families, earning less than 3,000 pesos monthly.
